In Pennsylvania, the state sets separate auto insurance requirements from the other 49 states. Each state differs, and Todd Lorenzi Insurance wants you to understand what the state of Pennsylvania requires of each driver’s insurance policy, plus what insurance companies must include in any quote.
Pennsylvania’s Requirements for Auto Insurance
Pennsylvania’s minimum legally required auto insurance only covers your liability to others on the road. That means the insurance that the state government requires only covers damage that you cause if you cause an accident. Your auto insurance policy must contain 15/30/5 coverage, meaning:
- Bodily injury coverage in the amount of $15,000 per person per accident
- Bodily injury coverage in the amount of $30,000 for all persons per accident
- Property damage coverage in the amount of $5,000 per accident.
You can add to that coverage to protect yourself from expensive medical and vehicle repair bills from single-vehicle accidents.
Optional Auto Insurance Coverage
The state government decides what types of auto insurance coverage insurance companies can offer. It also determines whether the state will function as a fault or no-fault state. Pennsylvania chose to be a no-fault state, so in each accident, the police determine who caused the accident, and that person incurs the fault. Those harmed in the accident file a claim with the at-fault driver’s insurance company and may take the driver to court.
Collision Coverage
In a single-vehicle accident, when the driver strikes a fence, garage door, mailbox, etc., they incur the fault. Collision coverage pays for the damage. This optional coverage also pays for collisions with animals, such as deer. This coverage includes a deductible that you pay before the insurance kicks in to pay for repairs. You set the deductible.
Comprehensive Coverage
Comprehensive coverage handles vehicle damage caused by unexpected events, such as a tornado, fire, or protest. This type of coverage also pays for vandalism and theft.
Medical Payments (MedPay) Coverage
MedPay pays for your medical bills, either directly to the medical provider or as a reimbursement to you. It also covers your health insurance deductible.
Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury (UMBI)
Uninsured motorist bodily injury (UMBI) pays for your medical expenses and necessary rehabilitative therapies if an uninsured or underinsured motorist causes an accident that injures you. In Pennsylvania, insurance companies must include bodily injury coverage for uninsured motorists in any quote they provide to you. The state government requires this of each insurer, but you can reject the coverage in writing.
